Great news for developers interested in utilizing cloud technologies!  ActiveState has announced that their Stackato Micro Cloud will remain free to the developing community after the Beta period ends.

Stackato, a Platform-as-a-Service solution, is built on the Cloud Foundry open source project that allows rapid deployment of applications written in a number of languages including Java, Python, Ruby, and PHP.  Stackato integrates with a private internal cloud or 3rd party Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform.

Originally launched as a Developer Preview in May of 2011, Stackato has been in an open beta phase since July.  At least partially in response to the great deal of interest that the service has received, ActiveState has chosen to keep the Stackato license free to the community forever:

"The interest from large enterprises and from developers around ActiveState Stackato has been astounding," said Bart Copeland, President & CEO of ActiveState. "In the spirit of supporting developer communities, ActiveState has determined that Stackato Micro Cloud will always be freely available to download, install and use for your development projects and internal deployments."

Technical support will not be available for Stackato, but full documentation, community forums, and mailing lists will continue to be available.
